Paxton History Tour Sites
Thank you for your interest in Paxton's rich history. This page is maintained by the Paxton Chamber of Commerce. To learn more about the 24 selected historic sites around our community, you can either browse this website or preferably visit the site in person and, using the camera on your phone, scan the QR code, which will be displayed at most sites. Each QR code link will bring up a brief history of the site and several pictures. Our goal is to continue to improve this project by adding more historic sites, pictures and information.
Almost all of the QR codes are up around Paxton now!

Between 9PM and Midnight on weekends, cars would fill the entire downtown draggin' main.
Draggin’ Main
Draggin’ Main had been a popular activity among Paxton teenagers for several decades. One would drive their vehicle up Market Street for four blocks, then “Shooting the U”, meaning U-turn, and head back down the opposite way. This would be repeated throughout the night. Along the way, you could stop for a quick chat with friends or maybe make some new ones. If you wanted to carry on your conversation, it was common to hear the well-known quote, “Go to Taft” which was a location a block anyway in front of the Farmers-Merchant Bank. If you were lucky that night would be a memory you would still remember today. This tradition ended in the 90’s when an influx of teenagers and problems were created by out-of-towners.
Now Paxton holds an annual tradition inviting people to “drag main” one night out of the year. This event encourages people to remember the nights of their younger years.
