Paxton History Tour Sites
Thank you for your interest in Paxton's rich history. This page is maintained by the Paxton Chamber of Commerce. To learn more about the 24 selected historic sites around our community, you can either browse this website or preferably visit the site in person and, using the camera on your phone, scan the QR code, which will be displayed at most sites. Each QR code link will bring up a brief history of the site and several pictures. Our goal is to continue to improve this project by adding more historic sites, pictures and information.

The Chautauqua was a religious celebration that lasted 10 days.
Chautauqua 1905-1930
The Chautauqua movement had its start in the late 1870’s when two Methodist ministers to inspire newer religious way with cheer and optimism. The inspiration grew and soon the event included good music, theater, speakers, and entertainment.
The Chautauqua began in Paxton in 1905 and was held in tents located across the street east of the County Court House with ten days of magnificent entertainment.
The object of the Chautauqua was to give people a good time with delightful entertainment for a very small price that everyone could afford.
In 1906 the Chautauqua was moved to Pells Park and ending in 1930.
